Almost everyone will be familiar with hemorrhoids; it is a common ailment that most of us suffer from one time or another. It is very embarrassing ailment for many sufferers to talk about. Hemorrhoids, which occur in the ano-rectal region, are swollen and stretched veins formed due to excessive pressure on them; this excess pressure can occur due to difficult bowel movement, pregnancy and pushing during delivery, and a few other situations. Formation of clot in the hemorrhoid can cause pain, burning and itching sensations. Bleeding is not uncommon in serious cases.

This article discusses some home treatments and remedial actions for hemorrhoid relief.

Soaking in Warm Bath
Soaking the hemorrhoidal region a number of times daily in a warm bath (sitz bath) will bring instant relief. Avoid using soap as this may cause irritation. Use a few drops additives containing iodine in the bath to sanitize it.  Gently dry using soft cloth after the treatment.

Plenty of Water
Be sure to drink at least 8 glasses spread throughout the day to help the body flush out unwanted waste and soften up the roughage. Avoid acidic sodas and other fizzy drinks.

Fiber and Good foods
Eat foods that are high in fiber, such as whole grains, fruits and vegetables. If necessary buy a good quality fiber supplement. This will help soften the stool, and create more roughage for bowel movements. Other foods like cherries, blackberries, blueberries – use these berries as juices to help bring down the hemorrhoid swelling and pain.

Foods to Avoid
Spices like Chili Pepper irritate bowels linings causing pain, especially in the hemorrhoidal region which becomes more sensitive. Coffee tea and alcohol has dehydrating effect in the body; again, an undesirable action when you are suffering from piles.

Additional Treatment for Serious Cases
In more serious case,  supplement your home care efforts with products designed to give relief; many of these are available over-the-counter and include formulations in the form of creams, drops and ointments, pills, gels suppositories that can help mitigate the piles pain.
Many prefer products that contain natural plant extracts as they are generally free of side effect. For treatment of hemorrhoids, herbal extracts of Witch Hazel, Butcher’s Broom, horse Chestnut and bioflavonoids from citrus fruit are well known natural sources.
Before buying such a product, try and find out as much information as possible to ascertain that you will get your money’s worth.
